“From their very beginnings, Leo Fender saw student models as a way to keep his instruments in players’ hands as they progressed. Introduced in 1964, the Mustang was the last of the line. It featured a 24” scale, twin pickups with new switching system and was the first of the student guitars to be fitted with a vibrato. The Competition versions were available from 1969 through to 1973 and featured the aforementioned stripes as well as some more elaborate custom colors, Competition Red, Burgundy and Orange.”
